Information for Community Leaders

Humanists Australia is dedicated to supporting the formation and growth of Humanist communities around Australia.

Becoming a Humanists Australia community offers a number of advantages over setting up an independent organisation:

  • Reduced legal obligations: there is no requirement for incorporation, AGMs, or annual returns. HA is already a registered charity (but not a Deductible Gift Recipient).
  • The burden of membership management is taken on by HA
  • We offer technical support, eg online presence, teleconferencing, event management assistance, merchandise store
  • You can negotiate a financial support plan
  • You will be covered by Humanists Australia's Public Liability and Volunteer insurance.

Community formation is a process that occurs in three phases:

  1. Getting to Know Each Other
  2. Setting Up
  3. Growing Your Community

Getting to know each other

During this phase you will nominate one or more community leaders who will be Humanists Australia members. We ask that your leaders try to attend Community Forums monthly. Community Forums are an opportunity for Community Leaders to share news and ideas for activities and growth, and discuss any issues they may be experiencing. They are also open to the public.

Setting up

Once your leaders have attended several Community Forums and have got to know the Humanists Australia national leaders, we will help you set up your community, including:

  • Creating a web page with you and adding it to our Communities page
  • Showing you how to update your web page
  • Negotiating a financial support plan
  • Creating an email group
  • Planning and advertising your first event

If you're stuck for ideas for what to do in your community, we have a list of ideas for activities and a list of discussion group topics that may inspire.

Growing your community

Once your community has been set up and your leaders are confident that you can organise and run your events, your community begins its growth phase.

We encourage you to continue coming to Community Forums to engage with national leadership and other community leaders, to get ideas for how to grow your community further, and get support for any issues you may be facing.
